I use soft pastels of mixed textures, depending on what they are needed for. For large surfaces I use the soft ones, and for details, lines, and accents I apply hard ones.

In terms of brands I have used Schminke, Windsor&Newton, Sennelier, Rembrandt, Faber Castell, Toison D'or, KOH-I-NOR, pastel pencils from Cretacolor, Faber Castell, Derwent, and many more.
